PR Crisis Management

"A truly successful crisis communications strategy pre-empts issues before they become headline news ... A more proactive strategy may have averted this tragedy and prevented the serious reputation damage likely to have been caused to the Pret brand."
Palm PR & Digital founding director, Liam Keogh
Most of us will have heard or read about the news involving Pret a Manger; a statement has now been made by the CEO but an article in PR Week discusses the delay in responding to the public and that Pret could have been more proactive. However, Liam Keogh, founding director at Palm PR & Digital, adds that crisis communications is "often the hardest PR discipline to get right".
The way a company communicates with the public following a crisis depends upon its type and scale. KFC bounced back using humour following the Great Chicken Shortage earlier this year.

The Institute for Public Relations provide various case studies on the topic; of course - BP's oil spill disaster has become a well-known case study on mistakes to avoid when delivering a PR crisis campaign and Forbes make suggestions on how it should be done.
